resource allocation problem

i have always found that govt (US or india) are not communicating among each other to optimize the resources. in chennai its very common scene for each dept to dig a whole on a road instead of co-ordinating on the schedule to just dig it once.
in the US, i have to send the same docs to dmv,uscis and everybody else who needs verification. why cant there be a trusted source which would push the info to other orgs.

simple reason! that might lead to information being centralized and more hackers interested in hacking it out. You know how paranoid people here are about info theft. It might be the reason, though I think its more a pain!

not quite true. even if the information is distributed its prone to hacking since its the same data anyway we are talking about. and moreover if its a govt agency acting as the central source, i wouldn't mind about issues like privacy etc

True! Information is prone to hacking in all cases, but the probability is higher when it is centralized. Imagine if you were a hacker. What would you prefer, breaking one system and getting all data or having to break ten systems to get the same amount of data? More info at the same place makes hacking it more attractive.

i mean even if the system is de-centralized the data being held in each system is the same(more or less). so, the hacker can be fine if he breaks any of the systems. he doesnt have to break all the n systems. all organisations have info on your ssn,contact and your immigration docs. im talking about these sort of things. making it centralized also reduces the points of vulnerablity to one(but also single point of failure) and with limited budget, it can be made more secure than securing each of them.

In that case, yeah! One system with a stronger protection is better than a no of them with weaker protection. Guess there's no one yet seeing the big picture of cost-cutting and convenience in this. Or are people too happy with the present setup that they think changing it is a pain? for, after all, not everyone welcomes change.
